Jessie P. Tompkins was born at Osterdock Iowa, Dec. 22, 1877 and died at Volga City, Iowa, Feb. 1, 1919, aged 41 years, 1 month and 9 days.
On the second day of March 1899, at Manchester, Iowa, she was married to Leon Blake who with five children Vivian, Loylo, Milburn, Dean, and Meryln, mourn her departure. Three sisters: Mrs. Cora Millard, of Lamont, Kan.; Mrs. Blanche Hester of Madison, Kan.; Mrs. Grace Carrington, of Oelwein, Iowa; and six brothers: Fred, of Waterloo, Ed of Oelwein, Harry of Osage, Archie of Fairfield, and Lee and Elmer of this city and a host of other relatives and friends are left to mourn the loss of a loving wife and mother and sister.
Mrs. Blake was taken sick with the influenza on Sunday, January 26, her sickness was of short duration and thought to be nothing serious until pneumonia developed on Friday noon. All that could be done by a trained nurse, two doctors and the family and friends was done, but she soon passed to the great beyond being to weak to withstand the terrible disease. Her death coming so suddenly was a great shock to the family and her friends.
Her brother Ed and sister Grace were the only ones of her relatives able to attend the funeral, the burial being made so soon on account of the nature of the disease. Mrs. Blake was a loyal and consistent member of the Presbyterian church, of the Ladies Aid Society. A memorial service will be held as soon as the church services can be resumed.
