Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 30 Jan. 1919.

M. P. Dunn died suddenly of heart failure at about 10:00 o'clock Monday evening January 27th, at the Palmer House Chicago where he had been employed as a clerk for several years. His son George C. Dunn was summoned from Waukesha, Wis., and the remains brought here for burial, arriving at about 8:00 o'clock this morning. The funeral was held at once at St. Joseph's church, Rev. Father Taken officiating, and he was laid in the family lot in St. Joseph's cemetery.

The remains were attended by the widow Mrs. Margaret Dunn, his sons Harry and George C., and Mrs. George C. Dunn. The pall bearers were F. G. Leibrock, D. C. Hale, James Sillivan, James Finnegan, Frank Liddy and Thos. Donahue. Among those present from out of town were Mrs. M. H. McCarthy and Justice McCarthy of Dubuque, James and Irvin Dunn of West Union, and Mrs. Dan Raftis of Wadena.

Michael Peter Dunn was born in Cox Creek township in this county, October 31, 1851, and had reached the age of 67 years, 2 months and 27 days at the time of his death. His parents Peter and Winnifred Dunn were pioneers of Clayton county.

He grew to manhood on the home farm, receiving his early education at the district school near by and later attending the Elkader school for a time.

On December 8, 1877, he was married to Margaret C. Gibson at Elkader who with two sons, Harry of Wymore, Neb., and George C. of Waukesha, Wis., and one granddaughter, Harriett Dunn of Wymore, Neb., are left to mourn the sudden death. Two sons, James G. and Francis preceded him to the great beyond. Three brothers, James S. Dunn of West Union; Senator T. A. Dunn, of Moorcroft, Wyo., and one sister Mrs. M. H. McCarthy of Dubuque, with other more distant relatives also survive him.

Mr. Dunn was a genial friendly character and had a wide circle of friends and acquaintances. About 1885 he became deputy Clerk of the Courts under J. E. Corlett, and in 1890 was elected Clerk, succeeding Mr. Corlett, Jan. 1, 1891. He held the office for six years.

After retiring from office Mr. Dunn remained in Elkader for several years being interested in the breeding of track horses, later going to South Dakota for a time. He has made his home in Chicago for some twelve or more years and for several years has been a clerk at the Palmer House in that city, his geniality and friendliness winning him many friends.

(Note: Although the obit says he is survived by three brothers, only two are named. Submiter has no explanation.)
