Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 15 May 1913. Elkport and Vicinity columns. Condensed.
Ida Caroline Friedericke Benschneider, oldest child of Mr. and Mrs. August Benschneider, Sr., was born Sept. 29, 1864, on the homestead near Littleport, Ia. She was christened in the old Lutheran church in Elkport, Ia., and grew to womanhood and was confirmed in the Lutheran faith.
For several years she assisted others in their domestic duties until her marriage to Henry Krouse, of Volga township, on June 16th, 1886. To this union two children were born, George and Elizabeth (or Lizzie, as she is familiarly called).
About six years ago the wife and mother grew ill and an operation was consented to, upon the urgent advice of physicians, and this proved successful, in as much as it gave the patient great relief from the excruciating pains which she was subject to up to that time. About six weeks prior to her death, alarming symptoms of the cancerous condition arose, and she grew weaker day by day. Wednesday evening she lapsed into complete unconsciousness and passed away on Thursday, May 8, 1913, aged 48 years, 7 months and 9 days.
She was a faithful member of the M.B.A. lodge at Littleport. Her pastor, Rev. Foelsch, of Elkport, conducted the burial services, which was one of the largest assemblages of funeral gatherings in this vicinity for some time. Thus she was escorted to the Ruegnitz Cemetery, where lie buried two infant brothers and one sister. Burial took place on Sunday, May 11, 1913, and the floral offerings were numerous and beautiful.
The pall-bearers were: Wm Meyer, Fred Behrens, Aug. Meyer, Fred Hohaus, John Gottschalk, and Louis Ortmann.
The relatives who deeply mourn her loss are her parents, Mr. and Mrs. August Benschneider, Sr., near Littleport; her brothers, Louis and August, of Elkport, Henry, of Elkader, and Charles, of Littleport; her sisters, Mrs. Minnie Krieg, of Volga township, Mrs. Reka Thein, of Volga township, and Mrs. Louisa Enderes, of Littleport, besides many other relatives, more distantly related.
Among other relatives from afar who came to attend the burial were: Mrs. Krouse, Sr., and John Schwichtenberg, of Goodell, Iowa; Wm. Krouse, of Colsburg; Mrs. C. Wentz, of Volga township; Mr. and Mrs. Jake Krouse, of Littleport; Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Monlux, of Wagner township; Mr. and Mrs. John Krouse, of Edgewood; Mr. and Mrs. Ed Hohaus, of Colsburg; Mrs. John Wentz, Mrs. G. Wertley, Mr. and Mrs. John Bahr, Mr. and Mrs. John Becker, Mr. and Mrs. George Lenth, Miss Louise Schoch, Mr. and Mrs. John Enderes and son William and Mr. and Mrs. Wm. C. Reimer, of Elkader.
