Christian Kennicker, one of the few remaining early settlers of Buena Vista township, died at his home near North Buena Vista last Friday, Dec. 13, aged 75 years, three months and 3 days, death resulting from liver and heart trouble.

Christian Kennicker, one of the few remaining early settlers of Buena Vista township, died at his home near North Buena Vista last Friday, Dec. 13, aged 75 years, 3 months and 3 days, death resulting from liver and heart trouble.

Deceased was born in the province of Hanover, Germany, Sept. 10, 1832. In 1858 he was married to Miss Mary Batka and immediately after, with his wife came to America. They first settled at St. Louis where they remained but a short time and then came north to Dubuque. From there they moved to Sherrills Mound and later moved to a farm two miles from Buena Vista and where he had continued to reside until his death.

His first wife died a number of years ago and in 1896 he was married to his second who survives him.

Surviving him also are five children by his first wife, two sons and three daughters, and are Frank of Buena Vista, Mrs. Albert Rapp and Mrs. Adam Steger of Dubuque, Joseph and Mrs. Louis De Sotels of Guttenberg.

Mr. Kennicker was a man of considerable influence in his neighborhood and during his time had been active in advancing anything pertaining to the welfare of the locality.

The funeral was held last Sunday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock with interment in the cemetery near Buena Vista. Services were conducted by a Lutheran minister of Dubuque.

Notes:
-- The obit of Anna M. Kennicker, who died in 1911, states she was married to Christian Kennicker in Germany. His obituary is confusing, naming his 1st wife as Mary Batka. Mary 'could' be Anna Maria (d. 1911), but who was still alive when Christian died in 1907. Perhaps they divorced? The marriage info. given in his obit should be verified.

-- To 'muddy the waters' further, the 1900 US census, Boardman twp. enumerates Christ Kennicker, HOH, b. Sept 1832, age 67, b. in Germany and his wife, Mary, b. July 1850, age 49, b. Iowa, father b. Ireland, mother b. Virginia, mother of 0 children. The number of years married for both is 5y.
