The Independence Bulletin-Journal of the 5th inst. has the following regarding the death of a former well known resident of Clayton county:
"George W. Russell passed away at his home east of the city, Wednesday night, death resulting from a complication of diseases, with heart trouble as one of the chief causes.
George W. Russell was born in Thetford, Vermont, in April, 1845, and came west to Farmington at the age of 9 years. In 1872 he was married to Margaret Tapper and in 1890 moved to Monona, Clayton county, where he engaged in the stock and grain business. Four years later he came to Independence and bought the Sampson George farm, 2 miles west of the city, retiring from active work about two years ago. Mr. Russell joined the Masonic fraternity at National and on coming to Independence affiliated with Independence lodge, No. 87, also the chapter and commandery. Five children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Russell two dying in infancy. About two years ago the daughter, Mamie, died in Jesup at the age of 27 years, and the father never seemed to recover from the shock caused by her death. Besides his wife, deceased leaves two sons, Ross and David, a twin brother, J. W. Russell, of Highland Park, Des Moines, and a sister, Mrs. E. B. Wakeman, of Wheaton, Ill. The funeral services will be held at Monona Friday afternoon under the auspices of the Masonic order. Mr. Russell was a good citizen, respected and esteemed by all who knew him. He was a loving husband and devoted father and his loss in the family circle will be keenly felt. A large circle of friends extend heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved relatives."
