Nicholas Friedlein died at his residence at 7 p.m. Sunday, September 1st, 1907, aged 73 years, 8 months and 19 days. Deceased was born in Schmelz, Bavaria, Germany, May 12, 1834, and came to Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1852. He worked on a farm near Mendota, Ill., several years and then came to Guttenberg in 1858 where he worked at several trades. In August, 1862, he enlisted in Company D, 27th Vol. Iowa Infantry and was honorably discharged in August, 1865, having participated in nine engagements during his three years of service. On October 14, 1865, he was married at Glen Haven, Wis., to Miss Mary A. Schrunk. Both resided on the farm in Millville township until eleven years ago when they purchased their present home on Front Street, where they have since resided. Mr. Friedlein was a good, upright citizen, well thought of and respected by all who knew him. The deceased is survived by his wife, two sons and three daughters: George F. and Fred N., of Guttenberg, Mesdames Henry and Andy Moser, at Osterdock, and Mrs. Fred Mueller, near Guttenberg, besides twenty-eight grand and three great-grandchildren, and a sister living in Germany. He was a member of Turkey River Lodge No. 194 I.O.O.F., of Prairie la Porte Lodge No. 147 A.F. & A.M., and of Hassendeirfel Post No. 140 G.A.R. Funeral was held Wednesday afternoon under the auspices of the Masons and his remains were laid at rest in the City cemetery.
