Elkader Register, Thur., 11 Apr. 1907.
About 8:00 o'clock Sunday evening, April 7th, Marshall W. Bachtell, another of our aged citizens, passed away to the great beyond. He had been in poor health for the past year and yet was able to be about the house until Saturday last when he was taken worse and rapidly declined.
Mr. Bachtell was born in Chester county, Pa., May 22nd, 1822, and was nearly 85 years of age at his death. At the age of 18 years he learned the trade of carpenter and joiner, working in Philadelphia. While in that city he married Sarah _. (looks like F. or P.) Cornog on Sept. 16, 1847. In 1854 Mr. and Mrs. Bachtell moved to Medina county, O., and then to Cleveland, O., where they resided one year. In the spring of 1856 they came to Clayton county, locating first at National, then in 1858 moving onto a farm in Grand Meadow twp. In 1871 they came to Elkader, where they have resided until claimed by death. Mrs. Bachtell passed away May 24th, 1905.
Three children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Bachtell, Adalaide, who died in 1856 (or 1858), aged five years, and Charles, who died in 1858, aged ten years, and the daughter, Laura Thompson, who alone survives to mourn the loss of father and mother. Mr. Bachtell was a quiet, unassuming citizen, a kind parent, an obliging neighbor and a man who would not intentionally wrong anyone.
The funeral was held Tuesday afternoon from his late residence, Rev. A. S. Hock, of the Congregational church, officiating. The interment was in the family lot in the Elkader cemetery.
Messrs. W. A. Preston, J. G. Hempel, H. C. Pahlas, F. A. Niemeyer, J. C. Stemmer and D. G. Griffith served as pall bearers.
