Elkader Register, Thur., 11 Apr. 1907.

Miss Rhoda Rebecca Baker was born at West Lavinston, Wiltshire, England, and died at her home in Elk township, March 29th, 1907, aged 70 years, 5 months and 2 days.

Her childhood was spent with her parents in England until her marriage with Wm. Tuck on Oct. 6th, 1858, who died Jan. 1_th (looks like 16th), 1861. To this union one daughter was born, who preceded her mother in death in May, 1882.

She was married the second time on Feb. 2nd, 18_8, to Thomas Godden.

Coming to America in the following year, landing at Quebec, locating first in the United States at Janesville, Wis., where they resided only a short time, when they moved to Iowa, locating at Dyersville in Dubuque county, making that place their home about two years. They then moved to Elk twp., Clayton county, where they continued to reside until the time of their death.

Her second husband preceded her just twenty years, he having died on March 30th, 1887. By her second marriage ten children were born, five sons and five daughters, seven of whom, four sons and three daughters, and also thirty grandchildren, are living to mourn the death of a good, loving, faithful mother and grandmother.

Before coming to America she united with the Episcopal church and after arriving in this country she made the M.E. church her choice, and of which she continued a good faithful member until the time of her demise. That she was leaning on the strong arm of her Redeemer was evident in the patient and uncomplaining way she bore the awful suffering of many years of the lingering disease which caused her death. Through the many hardships of early days in a new country, through all the long years of hard labor, and anxious heart braking hours spent in raising a large family, and when disease had fastened to her body her faith only grew stronger, her hope was more sure, and she was anxious to lay the burden down and be at rest. Give her of the fruit of her hands and let her own works praise her in the gates.
