Elkader Register, Thur., 4 Apr. 1907. Volga City Views column.
Mr. Wm. Shea was born in Callen, County Kilkenny, Ireland, Aug. 15th, 1833, and died March 28th, 1907. When but fourteen years of age he left home and came to this country, stopping at St. Louis, where he worked at the cooper trade for several years. He was married to Miss Mary Cormick, April 6th, 1857. Had he lived until April 6th he would have celebrated the 50th anniversary of his marriage. To this union were born eleven children, Sister Mary Martha, of Clinton, Iowa; Thomas, of Platte, S.D.; Mrs. James Crowley, of Babcock, Wis.; Anna, who died in infancy; Edward, Mrs. James Little, Martin, William Jr., Mrs. Thomas Bergan, Mrs. William Glennon and John, of Volga City.
The deceased came to Volga City forty-six years ago, purchasing the farm 1 1/2 miles southeast of Volga, where he lived until his death. His many sterling qualities of heart and mind endeared him to all who knew him. He died surrounded by his devoted wife (who had been his faithful companion for the past fifty years) and his sorrowing children, to whom he has left the priceless legacy of an honest and upright life. William Shea had always been a devoted member of the Catholic church and in his last hour was strengthened and consoled by the sacrament it imparts. Requiem Mass was celebrated at the Sacred Heart church at Volga City, April 1, 1907, Rev. Father Hetherington, celebrant, who also preached a touching and eloquent sermon. His mortal remains were laid to rest in the Catholic cemetery at Volga City, where the gentle breeze and whispering winds will whisper soft requiems over his cherished ashes.
