Elkader Register, Thur., 24 Jan. 1907. From the Strawberry Point Mail Press, undated.

Wednesday afternoon at 2 p.m. at his late residence in this city occurred the funeral of George H. Scofield, Strawberry Point a pioneer merchant, who passed quietly away on Monday afternoon, January 14. Mr. Scofield had been failing in health for the past year and had been confined to his home since Oct. 31, 1906. A noticeable change in his health became apparent on last Sunday and from that time he sank rapidly to the end.

Out of respect to a business associate of many years, the business houses closed Wednesday afternoon during the progress of the funeral. The public schools also closed during the afternoon in recognition of the service the deceased man had rendered the school district during the many years he was a member of the local school board. The Rev. Mrs. Crum, of Manchester, had charge of the funeral service and spoke in well deserved eulogy of the man who has for so long been identified with the growth of the community.

Interment was made in the local cemetery, J. C. Flenniken, Geo. Wheeler, C. L. Eaton, L. W. Preston, B. B. Davis and E. H. Houg acting as pall bearers.

In attendance at the funeral from out of town were Abe, Fred, Frank and John Jakway, of Aurora, and Mrs. Wm. Madison, of Edgewood. Owing to a wreck on the Great Western, Fred Blake, of Ft. Dodge, did not arrive until after the funeral Wednesday evening.

G. H. Scofield, son of W. W. and Maria Scofield, was born at Dewittville, Cha_tauqua Co., New York, Nov. _2, 1841. He was educated in his native state and in 1859 came to Clayton County, driving through with a horse and buggy. His parents followed him in the fall of the same year and settled in Cass township.

For three years he assisted his father on a farm near this place. In 1862 he embarked in the mercantile business with his father and the succeeding years have been devoted to that enterprise. In 1879 he purchased his father's interest in the business.

For three terms he served as a member of the county board of supervisors, a portion of which time he was chairman. For many years he was an active member of the Strawberry Point school board and was also mayor of Strawberry Point for several years besides serving some time as a councilman. He was married to Susan P. Wing Nov. 22, 18_3, who passed away April 28, 189_. Of the children born to this union there survive Harry W., Matie, Guy, and William, of Strawberry Point, Georgia and Bess, of Fort Dodge, and Susan, of Sandwich, Ill.

On August 1, 1900, he was united in marriage to Ida Baird, of this city, who survives to mourn his loss. Other relatives are his three grandchildren, Gertrude and Susan Blake, of Ft. Dodge, and Geo. F. Scofield, of Strawberry Point, and Martha Scofield, of this city.

Mr. Scofield was known everywhere as a man of honest purpose. As a public servant he won praise and the repeated endorsement of his fellow citizens for his conservative and trustworthy management of public matters confided to his care. As a businessman he gained the regard of a large circle of friends throughout this section, who will miss Strawberry Point's pioneer merchant after his noteworthy service of nearly forty-five years at the counter of his store in this city. - Strawberry Point Mail Press.

(Note: The article says he is survived by three grandchildren, yet four are named. Submitter has no explanation.)
