Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 3 Feb. 1916. Strawberry Point column.
W. P. Herman Marquardt, son of Henry and Margaretha Marquardt, was born September 8th, 1830, at Hammerall, Schleswig Holstein, Germany. In the year 1858 he immigrated to America and for a short time lived in Valparaiso, Ind. Having a longing to see this country, he traveled through the southern states and California. After this he returned to the northern states and served in the Civil War for nine months. On December 25th, 1856 (year appears to be in error), he came to Strawberry Point, making this place his permanent home. On the 1st of January, 1869, he was united in marriage to Bertha Buehrer and to them were born four children: Mrs. Emma Schug, Mrs. Anna Cook, Mrs. Marry Hopp and Martin Marquardt. The deceased followed the trade of a stone mason and enjoyed good health until some months ago when he gradually failed and his condition became critical. He departed Saturday, January 22nd, at the ripe old age of 85 years, 4 months and 14 days. A large concourse of friends and neighbors assembled at the German Lutheran church to pay their respects to the bereaved mourners and have a last farewell view of an old citizen who was loved by all who knew him for his quiet and conservative habits. He leaves to mourn his loss his wife, four children and ten grandchildren.
