Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 13 Jan. 1916. Local News column.

Doris Ortman was born February 11th, 1839, at Stolpe, Meck'enburg, Germany. In 1863 she was married to John Friedrich Mueller, at Griebow, Germany. About nine years later the family emigrated to this country and settled in Clayton county, Iowa, which has been their home ever since. After the children had grown up and had established homes of their own, the old couple, now well advanced in years, made their home with their daughter, Mrs. Henry Bente, in Read township. Here Mr. Mueller passed away on December 15th, 1912, at the age of 82 years. The wife and faithful companion was left to mourn his death.

A few weeks be'ore Christmas her daughter, Mrs. Bente, was taken to Elkader for an operation at the Moran hospital. On Christmas day the daughter returned home much improved, but sorely grieved to find mother sick in bed with asthma and an attack of la grippe. A doctor was called at once, and everything possible was done to give relief to the sufferer. At times it seemed as if she would recover, but the last few days she failed visibly and passed away on Friday, January 7th, at 5 o'clock in the morning, at the age of 76 years, 10 months and 26 days.

Her departure is mourned by two sons and two daughters: Fritz, of Emmetsburg, Iowa; Charles, of Elkader; Mrs. Ida Bente and Mrs. Agnes Lindeman, of Read township. She also leaves twenty-three grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Muschewske, of Guttenberg, Iowa, and Mrs. Hanna Ehn, in Hamburg, Germany, and many friends and old acquaintances.

Funeral services were held at the home of Henry Bente and in the Ev. Frieden's Church, Monday, Rev. Franke officiating. Interment was made in the East Side cemetery. May she rest in peace.
