Wednesday morning at 3 A.M. Mrs. P.W. McClelland departed this life, aged 23 years, 7 months and 19 days. She has been in poor health for over two years and her demise was not wholly unexpected. She was the only daughter of Mrs. Wm. Fair. The funeral took place Thursday at 2 P.M. from the family residence, Rev. W.S. Potwin, of Independence, officiating.

Her life so brief was filled with exotics of rare loveliness. Known as she has been here from infancy, her friends are numerous, who look upon her life among them as a short but pleasant dream, but she was fully prepared for the change that awaited her. It seemed fitting that her pastor who joined her in wedlock to the husband of her choice should also perform the last sad rites. The singing led by Mrs. A.N.M. Olmsted was all that could be desired on an occasion like this. It reached in a comforting and soothing way the hearts of all present and deeply stirred the chords of sympathy for the bereaved ones; but as the life of the departed faded like a beautiful summer day, so do we know it was merged into a glorious dawn.

She has crossed the shining river.
And has gained the radiant shore,
Where no heart with grief can quiver,
And all parting scenes are o'er;
She has met the dear departed,
And has heard the welcome home;
By the true and tender hearted,
That before her hence had flown.

They were waiting at the portal,
To receive her spirit there,
When she laid aside the mortal,
For a garb more bright and fair
She has joined the heavenly chorus,
So we ne'er should think her dead,
For she'll oft return to greet us,
From the land just ov'r head.

We will soon pass on to meet her,
And make whole the broken band,
Meet her just across the river,
In the happy spirit land,
Where her arms will be extended
To embrace us one by one,
When our work below is ended,
And our mortal course is run.

~Elkader Register, Thursday, February 12, 1891

Note: Burial is in the Monona City cemetery w/husband Percival & son Roy
