John D. Layton, son of Joseph and Matilda Layton, was born in Highland township, Clayton county, July 30, 1867, and passed away at Mineasopis, Minn., July 28, 1926, at the age of 58 years, 11 months and 28 days. He was one of a family of three children, one sister, Mrs. James Mathews of Farmersburg, Iowa, one brother, Joseph Layton of Hiawatha, Kansas, both of whom survive him.
In August, 1887, he was united in marriage to Anna V. Ernst. They resided on the home farm in Highland and from there, they moved to Elkader, where they resided for about 15 years, leaving there in 1913 for Minnesota and residing in different parts of that state since. Six children were born to them, Fred E. of Minneapolis, Minn., Dils D. of Philadelphia, Missouri, Stella, deceased, Arthur J. who died at Algiers, France, Lewis L. of Milwaukee, Wis., and Henry at home and one grandson, Orion E. Layton.
Mr. Layton had been in ill heath since the death and burial of his wife one month ago. He was a member of the Mystic Camp 319 of the M.W.A. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him and he was a most kind and loving father, a wonderful friend.
