Elkader Register, Thur., 13 May 1926.

Samuel Bashford Whitford.

The community was greatly shocked to hear of the sudden death of Sam Whitford, a highly respected and dearly beloved resident of this community. Though he passed away with startling suddenness while milking in the barn, it had been expected that he would be taken this way for he had been failing in health for some time and suffered from heart weakness. The sympathy of all is extended to the relatives, especially his brother Henry and family, who first found him.

The deceased was born in Wisconsin on April 13th, 1850. When a boy his parents moved from Wisconsin to Iowa, where he spent his boyhood days. When a young man of about twenty-one years of age he went west and settled in Clay county but later returned to this community and lived on the farm he now owns for the last 38 years.

He was united in marriage to Jeanette Ensign on March 11, 1875. His companion died about 16 years ago. On July 16, 1915, he was united in marriage to Dora Wyatt at West Union who passed away October 22, 1922.

Mr. Whitford was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church and until recent years when his health failed was active in the leadership of the church, having served as trustee, steward and a member of the official board for many years. His pastor was always a welcome visitor and his love for Christ manifested itself in many ways.

He leaves to mourn his loss three brothers: Charley of Ruthven, Iowa; Warren of Fayette and Henry of Volga City, and one sister, Mrs. Hattie Hoyt of Des Moines, a number of other relatives and a host of friends.

Funeral services were held following a brief service at the home and at the Methodist church, Rev. Robert Davies, his pastor, officiating and the music was furnished by a male quartette. Interment was made in Hill Crest cemetery.
