The death of Mrs. Margaret Eppens, long-time highly esteemed resident and worthy mother of Guttenberg, occurred at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Ihm in Guttenberg last Thursday morning, Oct. 20, the cause of her death being mostly due to the infirmities of old age. She was 88 years and eight months old when the Angel of Death called her to the Great Beyond. Mrs. Eppens was the mother of Mrs. Carl Ihm. Deceased was born at Cincinnati, Ohio, on Feb. 20, 1844, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Stevens. She spent her childhood days in Cincinnati, then came to Guttenberg where she lived the remainder of her life. She was married to Mr. Henry Eppens, who preceded her in death in the year 1890. For many years the Eppens family successfully operated the Central hotel in Guttenberg. Mrs. Eppens was loved by all who knew her. To do acts of kindness for her family and friends was her greatest pleasure in life at all times, and her memories will be forever cherished by all in this community. She is survived by five daughters, Mrs. Millie Schirmer, Mrs. Mabel Ihm and Miss Emma Eppens of Guttenberg; Mrs. Ida White of Volga City, and Mrs. Etta Fonda of St. Paul, Minn.; one son, Walter Eppens of Colesburg; 14 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Louise Guss of Dubuque, and many other relatives and friends, by whom she will be sadly missed. Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. D. D. Welch of Dubuque, at the Carl Ihm home in Guttenberg, Sunday afternoon, with interment in the city cemetery. The funeral was well attended by relatives and friends from far and near.
