Elkader Register, Thur., 17 Jan. 1901.
After an illness of several months, Geo. H. Smart, died at Guttenberg, Friday morning, Jan. 11th, 1901. He was born at Bellows Falls, Vt., in 1837. He was educated in the High School at Walpole, N.H., and in April, 1856, with his father, Harrison G. Smart, settled in Garnavillo. Here he married Frances Barnes, who with two children, Hattie E. and Elmer, survive his death.
For many years the deceased stood high in the educational ranks of the county, being principal of the Guttenberg School and county Superintendent. He has also been prominent in Masonic circles, being a Past Master of Prairie La Porte Lodge No. 147. At his death he was a member of the Iowa Workmen and M.W.A. Lodge at Guttenberg.
The funeral was held on Monday, the burial being at Garnavillo under the auspices of the Masonic lodge of Guttenberg assisted by brethren from neighboring lodges.
Our brother has passed away to that undiscovered country from whose bourne no traveler ever returns, let us hope that the burial mantle has been cast over him, and that his spirit has entered the glorious and celestial temple, that house not made by hands, eternal in the heavens. Our sympathy goes out to those who mourn.
