Elkader Register, Thur., 28 Feb. 1901.
Daniel Benjamin Verni, son of Adam and Christina Henkes, of Wagner twp., was born March 10, 1882, and died Feb. 20th, 1901. The most of his life was spent at the parental home, he having been the elder son still at home and therefore the main dependence and hope of the family. He was noted for industry and honesty, having a good word for everyone and always jolly, consequently gaining a host of friends. There was perhaps no young person of this community more widely known than he was. For some time past he has taken an interest in education which terminated in his attending the winter term of school at Decorah, Ia. After four or five weeks attendance he was taken sick with _rysipelas of the face and returned home where he had the best of medical care. He was pronounced out of danger, when suddenly and least expected he was stricken with heart failure causing death almost instantaneous.
His sudden death is a great shock to the family and to the community. The writer called to see him during his sickness and found him hopeful and patient through it all. He gave evidence of being interested in the welfare of the community, especially in a literary sense. He always delighted to sing, and gave promise to achieve much in that line, as he had a beautiful voice.
He was an obedient son and was admired and loved in his home and by his many friends and companions. There remains to mourn the loss of this kind son and brother, a father, three brothers and two sisters, Willie, of Monona twp., Mrs. Hattie Kirchman, of Ohio, and Celia and Cyrus at home, and David who is helping to restore peace in the Philippines, and therefore not able to be present. This and the previous death of the dear mother added much to the present grief of the family.
The funeral, which was one of the largest ever witnessed here, was held at the Evangelical church in Wagner twp., Sunday, Feb. 24th, Revs. Pfefferkorn and McCord, of Monona, officiating. Some very appropriate remarks were made in both the English and German languages, the Monona choir also rendered some fitting music for the occasion.
This community mourns the loss of one of its most worthy members and furthermore extends to the bereaved family in their great loss their heartfelt sympathy.
The family desire to extend through the REGISTER their thanks to the many friends who so kindly assisted them during their bereavement.
