Elkader Register, Thur., 14 Feb. 1901. Local News column.

At the family residence in this place on Tuesday morning, after an illness of a few weeks, Mrs. Martin Daly passed away. She was born in Ireland about sixty years ago, and came to this country at an early date.

In 1868 she was united in marriage with Mr. Daly in this city, and to them were born five children, Misses Mary and Julia, Dr. J. J., of Charles City, Dr. W. T. of Cresco, and Martin Jr., of Galesburg, Ill., who with the husband survive her.

Deceased was a mother devoted to her children, whom she has lived to see occupy responsible positions in life. We sympathize with them in the great loss they have sustained. The funeral will be held Friday morning at St. Joseph's church upon the arrival of the train.

Elkader Register, Thur., 21 Feb. 1901. Local News columns.

Died, at her home in Elkader, Wednesday Feb. 13th, Mrs. Margaret Daly, aged 59 years. Deceased was born in County Tipperary, Ireland, and came to this country in 1867, after a short residence at the homes of her brothers Michael and Patrick O'Brien in McGregor, she was married to Martin Daly, and came to Elkader, which has been her home up to the time of her death. Her husband, three sons, and two daughters survive her.

She was a devout Catholic and went to her reward with all the consolations of her holy religion. Family pride of the right sort was a distinguishing characteristic of this estimable woman. She wished her descendants to be worthy of their ancestors who for many generations have taken an active part in the great but unequal struggle in Ireland for the rights of their religion and nationality. In this, through many sacrifices and by indomitable energy she succeeded happily.

Two of her sons, Joseph and William, as physicians at Charles City and Cresco, have already attained high standing in their profession, Martin is a locomotive fireman on the C.B. & Q. R.R. Her eldest daughter, Sister Julia, of the order of Presentation Nuns at Dubuque, has consecrated her life and her high musical attainments to religion, and Mary has been for several years past, a very successful teacher in the schools of this county.

Mrs. Daly died happy in the conviction that she had performed her life work well, and she faced what to many is a dread summons, with the utmost confidence and serenity. Her funeral which took place at St. Joseph's Church Saturday was very impressive. Solemn Requiem Mass was celebrated by Rev. O'Donnell, of McGregor, assisted by Rev. Hogan, of Monona, as Deacon; Rev. Campbell, of Volga, Subdeacon; and Rev. Reilly, Master of Ceremonies. Father Campbell preached a very eloquent sermon, Subject, "The Cause of Death - Si_" and very effectively showed why a person whose whole life is a preparation for death, need, like this good woman, have no fear when dying.

A large number was present from the surrounding country also her brother, James W. O'Brien of New York; Mrs. Alice O'Brien and Miss Daly of Cresco; W. S. O'Brien and wife and P. H. O'Brien, of McGregor; Mrs. Henry and Messrs. Melanaphy of Decorah.

The people of this city were shocked to-day on learning that Mrs. Martin Daly had passed away as it was generally understood that she was improving in health, yet she had been sick for some considerable time. Deceased was born in Ireland but emigrated to this country in an early day and in 1858 was united in marriage in this city to Martin Daly, who with five children, the Misses Mary and Julia, and Dr. J. J., Dr. Wm. T. and Martin Daly Jr., also other kindred, survive her, and judging her from her children she must have been a good mother who lived and toiled for those she loved.—Elkader Democrat.

Transcriber’s Note: St. Joseph’s Cemetery indicates this was Margaret and she was born in 1848.
