Elkader Register, Thur., 28 March 1901.
Our community was startled Friday morning by the report that A. W. Purman was dead. Although generally known that he was sick and could not recover, the announcement of his demise came unexpectedly.
Andrew Wood Purman, oldest son of Peter B. and Nancy Purman, was born in this county March 10th, 1856. He spent his boyhood days on the farm with his parents, going to school quite steady until he was about 20 years of age, thereby receiving a good education. His mother dying when he was 10 years of age, his father united in marriage some four years afterward to Martha P. Brookshier, who had the same tender care for him that his own mother had. He was united in marriage in March, 1880, to Miss Marinda Penhollow. He bought a farm and went to housekeeping on it, remaining there nearly five years, when he moved his family to East Elkport, and engaged in the insurance business which he followed until a few years ago. Four children were born to them, of which two died when small. His greatest desire was to educate his children and his daughter, Miss Ina, graduated when she was 17, and is among the best of our county's school teachers, while his son Palmer is going to school at Elkport and is a bright boy.
All who knew Drew loved him, for he was a very kind hearted man and father. He died March 22d, 1901, of consumption. He had been ailing some time but only of late did his sickness alarm his friends. He remained in bed only one day. He leaves a wife, two children, an aged father and mother, and brothers and sisters to mourn his loss. The funeral was held Sunday, with Rev. Hansel officiating, and was very largely attended, the interment being in the Hall cemetery.
