Elkader Register, Thur., 28 Mar. 1901. Garnavillo column.

Last Saturday at this place occurred the burial of Mrs. Alonzo Brown, of McGregor. The deceased was for many years a resident of Garnavillo. While here her husband became consumptive and went east for his health but died soon after in New York state. After his death Mrs. Brown taught in our public schools for some time and then moved to McGregor, where her daughter Jessie held a position as teacher. About ten weeks ago she was taken sick with the grip, which, with a general debility, caused her death. She was a faithful member of the Congregational church and gave many evidences of a beautiful Christian character. Two children, Jessie living at McGregor and Emmett residing at Des Moines, a brother, James O. Crosby, and a half-brother, H. B. Crosby, both of Garnavillo, together with other relatives and friends survive to mourn her departure.

Although Maria has a gravestone in the Old Garnavillo cemetery, Alonzo may not be buried there. He died 3/6/1867, in Chautauqua Co., New York, where he had gone for his health. Cemetery records for the Evergreen cemetery, Sinclairville, Chautauqua co. record his burial there.

DIED - At McGregor, Iowa, March 22nd, 1901, of grippe followed by general debility, after an illness of over two months, Mrs. Maria C. Brown, aged 76.

The funeral was held at her late residence on Saturday March 23, services conducted by Rev. B.W. Burleigh, interment in the family lot in the cemetery at Garnavillo.

Mrs. Brown's maiden name was Maria Crosby. She was born in 1824 at Lake George, Warran Co., New York. In childhood she, with her parents, moved to Cattarangus county, New York, where she lived to womanhood, and there married Mr. Alonzo Brown in the year 1846.

In 1856 Mr. and Mrs. Brown came to Iowa, and settled at Garnavillo where he engaged in the practice of law, for a time with Hon. J.O. Crosby, a brother of Mrs. Brown.

Four children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Brown, two of whom died in early childhood, and two are now living, Mr. J. Emmet Brown and Miss Jessie Brown of this city.

Mrs. Brown was educated at the academies of Seneca Falls, Springville, and Fredonia and in early life was a teacher, and after the death of her husband, which occurred in 1867, she again took up teaching, and for several years taught in the public schools.

She was a member of the Congregational church at Garnavillo until she moved to McGregor in 1882, since then has been an attendant of the Congregational church of this place. She lived an unostentatious consistent christian life untiring in her devotion to her family.

Mrs. Brown was of a quiet retiring disposition, almost shrinking from the general public, but with her intimate friends, and acquaintances, she was genial and frank. She was studious, fond of books, and of cultivated companions, and possessed fine literary tastes and a well stored mind. The world is better, for her exemplary worthy life.
