21 March 1901 article:

A SAD ACCIDENT.

On last Sunday afternoon while Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Campbell were driving along Yellow river, near Volney, huge cakes of ice were suddenly hurled across the road by a sudden rise in the already swollen river; one of these cakes struck the horses sweeping them toward the river but six feet distant from the carriage. Mr. Campbell sprang out and attempted to assist his wife, but just as his fingers touched her another rush of ice and water struck the buggy and swept it into the river, carrying her into the roaring torrent and so nearly crushing the life out of Mr. Campbell that he was unable to rescue her.

The husband is nearly wild with grief. The people of Monona and Volney sympathize with him and the relatives who mourn the loss of a kind and loving wife, sister and neighbor. Mr. Campbell is with difficulty prevented from joining in the search which is being made for the body. Up to this time, however, all efforts are unavailing to find any trace except her veil found on the third day of the search a mile downstream. The body of one horse was found about six miles down the stream; the other horse about eight miles from the scene of the accident. This horse had both harnesses clinging to him. Fragments of the carriage were found, but the swollen river, ice and drift wood have prevented the earnest search parties from discovering the body of Mrs. Campbell.

(Note: A second article identifies the husband as James Campbell, Monona city Marshal, who had been married about one year. Mrs. Campbell is noted as the former Miss Jenkins.)

28 March 1901 article:

The body of Mrs. Campbell, who was drowned in Yellow river, Sunday, March 17th, was found on Friday, about three-quarters of a mile from the scene of the accident. Funeral services were held in the M.E. church in Monona, on Saturday afternoon, by Rev. P. N. Dwello, of Dubuque, assisted by Revs. McCord and Beatty, of Monona. The Rebecca lodge had charge of the funeral service. A very large concourse of friends were in attendance. The sorrowing husband, mother, sister and brother have the deepest sympathy of the people of Monona and Volney.

Monona Woman Drowned.
Monona, March 18.—While Mr. and Mrs. A. W. [sic] Campbell, of this place, were returning from Volney Sunday afternoon about 5 o'clock they were caught in the rush of water caused by the breaking of an ice gorge, which swept them into the channel of the Yellow river. Mr. Campbell escaped, but Mrs. Campbell and the team of horses have not been found up to noon today, although searching parties have dragged the river since the accident. The little river is usually a small stream, easily forded, but the melting snow and breaking of the ice gorge made it a raging torrent. Mr. and Mrs. Campbell were amid stream when the ice gorge above them burst, and although they hastened the team, they were caught in the flood just as the horses bad gained the bank.
