Elkader Register, Thur., 14 Mar. 1901. Garnavillo column.

Arno August Julius, son of Fred Schmacher and wife, departed this life on the morning of March 6th between 6 and 7 o'clock, at the age of 16 years, 9 months and 12 days.

The deceased was born in Garnavillo in 1884 and grew to be a very promising boy. In the spring of 1897, with twenty-four of his classmates, was confirmed in St. Paul's Lutheran church and is the second of their number who has passed to the great beyond. He attended the high school for a number of years but not being in robust health fell an easy prey to disease and during the past few years was obliged to abandon his studies. At an early age he showed great talent and love for music and for years has been a member of the Garnavillo Cornet Band. He was a general favorite among all classes and goes to his long rest universally mourned. Burial services took place Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Six of his classmates, viz.; Arthur Meyer, Weber Kuenzel, Marvin Luehsen, Willie Stiehl, Marvin Brandt and Baldwin Krasinsky, acted as pall bearers, and six of his girl classmates, viz.; Walda Brandt, Clara Dettman, Carrie Meyer, Lizzie Meyer, Lizzie Ihde and Mahalie Bruns, dressed in white, carried the floral offerings which were numerous and very beautiful, and in a way betokened the love friends bore him. The band with muffled and seemingly mournful instruments headed the procession playing a dirge and acquaintances from far and near were present to perform the last sad rites.

His mortal remains were interred in the family lot in the silent city of the dead. We extend our sympathy to the parents and brother in their deep sorrow.
