Elkader Register, Thur., 7 Nov. 1901. McGregor columns.
John Walter, the pioneer furniture man, had the misfortune to become ill Sunday. While sweeping snow he was taken with an apopletic fit, falling and becoming unconscious. His condition was considered serious at first, his age being against his recovery. But he improved so that he talked and seemed likely to get well. Tuesday morning however, he was taken worse and died in a short time. He leaves a widow, daughter and several grandchildren, besides his brother Peter, with whom he has been connected in business for many years. He came here when McGregor was young and has grown old with it, and his death dissolves the oldest firm in town. He was seventy one years old and was born in Germany, coming to this country in early boyhood.
