"Mrs. Amanda McMonigal, a former resident of this vicinity for many years passed away at the home of her son, Selden [Seldon], in Dubuque Thursday. The remains were brought here for interment at the Brown cemetery. Rev. F. A. Riggs conducted the funeral services, which were held Saturday afternoon from Emerson Chapel. The deceased was born in Pennsylvania, February 24, 1840, and came to Iowa in early life. She was twice married. Her first husband was J. Cropp, who served in the Civil war, sickened and died soon after his return home. Of the two daughters born to them, Mrs. Mary Cornwell survives. She later became the wife of Frank[lin] McMonigal, and to them nine children [eleven] were born. Two daughters, Jane and Julia preceded the mother in death. In addition to the daughter[s] mentioned above the following children survive: Mrs. Frank Graham of Paonia, Colo.; Mrs. Belle Clendennen of Fayette; Mrs. Margaret Blaker of Colesburg; John of Mt. Hope, Wis.; James of Strawberry Point; Selden, of Dubuque and Simon [Josiah, or "Sine"] of Buena Vista. Her descendants also include 41 grandchildren and 40 great grandchildren. Mrs. McMonigal was a truly good woman and her memory will long be cherished by her children and friends."
