Funeral services for John Melcher, 84, were held Thursday afternoon, Dec. 10, at 1:30 o'clock at the Methodist Church in Monona with the Rev. E. Wayne Hilmer officiating. The body lay in state at the church from 12:00 to 1:30 p.m. Burial was in the Monona city cemetery.

Mr. Melcher died at his home in Monona after a lingering illness of many months.

He was the son of Nicholas and Amelia Steiret Melcher, born on a farm in Linton Township, Allamakee County, May 7, 1875. When he was nine years old the family moved to a farm two miles northeast of Monona where he grew to manhood. He attended the Walnut Grove rural school.

He was married to Effie Leas on Dec. 21, 1904. They purchased a farm in the Bigfoot district where they resided for 40 years. Their family of 12 children, all living today, grew up on the home farm.

Fifteen years ago he and his wife moved to Monona, where he followed the carpenter trade until his retirement.

He was a member of the I.O.O.F. and all his adult life was a member of the Methodist Church first at Volney and at Monona, serving in an official capacity.

Preceding him in death were his parents, a sister, Mrs. Marg Thias, and a brother, Fred Melcher.

Surviving are his wife; 12 children, Lester of Chicago, Ill., Noel of Anacortes, Wash., the twins, Arden of LaPorte City and Arlene (Mrs. Robert Hillisheim of Lakeland, Fla., Amelia (Mrs. John Walsh) of Ridgeway, John K. of Harpers Ferry, Joan (Mrs. Milton McCraney) of Waterloo, Vernon of rural Waukon, Wilma (Mrs. Dave Cowell), Glen, Carl and Ivan, all of Monona; two brothers, Joe and Frank of Monona; 37 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; numerous other relatives and many friends.

Music for the service was provided by Mrs. Ben Frese Jr. and Mrs. George Martin. Organist was Mrs. Ivon J. Schultz. Pallbearers were Robert Ferguson, Kenneth Pufahl, Robert McNally, Frank R. Bothel, Arthur Kaiser, Vern Koth, Roy Schorg and Ray Wiethorn.
