Garnavillo: Funeral services were held from St Paul's Lutheran church here at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon for Gene Eberhard, 35, Garnavillo business man who died Sunday afternoon following a car accident. Burial was made in the city cemetery in Guttenberg.
Eberhard was fatally injured on the south Guttenberg hill Saturday evening when his car apparently skidded on the slippery pavement. It broke off some of the guard rail on the east side of the road and then caromed into the bluff on the right. Eberhard was thrown from the car and was found lying on the pavement by Mr. and Mrs. George Bogas of Dubuque when they came past the scene.
The injured man was taken to the Guttenberg hospital where it was learned that the ribs on one side of his body were broken and that a lung had been pierced. He was taken to Xavier hospital in Dubuque early Sunday morning and died there at 5 o'clock that afternoon.
Eberhard had been a resident of Garnavillo for a number of years and was proprietor of the Eschelon Café here. His daughter Sandra is a member of the Garnavillo high school girls basketball team that won the state championship last year.
He was born on Feb. 8, 1918, at Guttenberg and was the son of Eugene and Olga Eckart Eberhard. He spent his boyhood days in Guttenberg and was married to Lois Hyde of Osterdock.
He is survived by his wife and daughter, his father Eugene Eberhard of McGregor, and his grandfather Ed. P. Eberhard of Guttenberg. His mother preceded him in death several years ago.
