Mr. Ashby was born in Virginia, in the year 1810, and after wards lived in Ohio, Illinois, Wisconsin and finally in Iowa, to which state he came in 1848. He first settled on a farm, about eight miles from Elkader, and after a few years moved on to the Hop Farm.
