Elkader Register, Thur., 16 May 1878. Osborne Local Items column, dated 14 May 1878.
The death of Newel Pratt has cast a gloom over the entire community. Mr. Pratt was an old resident of Cox Creek and very highly respected. He came to this neighborhood about twenty years ago from Illinois and has since resided here. He has been sick about one year with consumption, and about six months of that time confined to his bed. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Van Ness, of Strawberry Point. The remains were deposited in the Cox Creek cemetery. He leaves a wife and three children to mourn his loss. A large concourse of friends followed the remains to their last resting place. Charles Pratt, of East Illinois was telegraphed for and arrived in time to attend the funeral.
(Note: A second article names him as I. N. Pratt, date of death May 8th, in the 45th or 46th year of his age. A brother from Illinois was in attendance at the funeral. His children were described as small.)
