Elkader Register, Thur., 21 Mar. 1878.

We learn of the death of Mrs. Wm. Harding, of Giard, which event occurred on Friday evening last. Mrs. Harding was one of the oldest residents of this county, and is remembered by many of the old settlers in the days when she proved the noble matron of the old American House at McGregor. She was a woman universally admired; good, noble and true. Uncle William has the sympathy and condolence of his many warm friends in this section of the county. The funeral occurred on Sunday, and was the largest ever held in that township, many being present from McGregor and other towns.

(Note: Her first name is shown in WPA records, and she and William are shown buried in Pleasant Grove cemetery, McGregor.)

Mrs. W.H. Harding, aged 58, died at Giard, on the 15th. The deceased and her little family were among the early settlers of McGregor, having located there about the year 1851, and will be remembered by the traveling world as the quiet, unassuming and lady-like hostess of the old American, since re-built and known as the Flanders House.

On the 15th of March, 1838, she was married, and died on the fortieth anniversary of that eventful day and the thirty-sixth anniversary month of her hotel life.
