Died. In Monona, Monday, Feb'y 13th, 1899, at 8:30 p.m., Mrs. Betty A. Buck, aged 73 years and 5 days.

Mrs. Buck was born in Essex county, N.Y., Feb'y 8th, 1826. In 1849 she was married to Jacob Newkirk and they came to Iowa and settled near National, in this county, where their only child, Mrs. L.W. Cook, of Liberty, Neb., was born, and was with her mother during her sickness.

Mr. Newkirk, at the breaking out of the civil war, enlisted in a Minnesota regiment, serving nearly three years, dying in one of the Southern hospitals in 1864.

Dec. 18th, 1866, Mrs. Newkirk was married to S.H. Buck, with whom she lived a little over thirty-two years, surviving him only thirty-four days.

Mrs. Buck united with the M.E. church in 1865, and has lived a consistent christian life, and during her long illness, a great sufferer, she was patient, ready, waiting for the summons "come home."

The funeral was held yesterday morning, a short service at the house, and public services at the church, Rev. P.N. Dwello officiating. Burial in Monona cemetery.

~Monona Leader, Thursday, February 16, 1899

Note: Her gravestone is inscribed Betsy A. Smith-Buck. Presumably Smith being her maiden name. Samuel H. Buck is buried with his 1st & 2nd wives in the National cemetery.
