—J. F. Bassett, of the once well- known grain firm of Bassett, Huntting & Co., of McGregor, died in Minneapolis, Monday afternoon, from apoplexy. He was seventy-five years of age and still engaged in business, being a mem­ber of the firm of Commons, Bassett & Co.

Another Old Settler Gone.
Mr. Jas. F. Bassett died in Minneapolis last Monday noon. Mr. Bassett was born in Sag Harbor, Suffolk Co. Long Island, state of New York, Nov. 5, 1824. He came to McGregor in 1857, when he and Mr. W. F. Huntting engaged in the grocery business until 1860, when he and Mr. Huntting engaged in the produce business extensively under the firm name of Bassett, Huntting & Co. and continued the same up to 1887 when Mr. Bassett moved to Minneapolis,
He was always considered a good neighbor and a reliable business man under all circumstances. The survivors of the family are Mrs. Bassett, Kate now Mrs. Kimball, residing in Boston, Bertha, now Mrs. Dr. Lewis in Minneapolis, and Miss Georgia, living with her mother in Minneapolis. All of whom we can assure have the sympathy of old friends in McGregor.—McGregor Times.

James F. Bassett, a member of the firm of Commons, Bassett & Co., grain merchants, with offices in the chamber of commerce died suddenly of apoplexy at his apartments in the West Hotel yesterday afternoon.

Mr. Bassett left his office shortly after 12 o'clock in usual health and good spirits. During the morning he had complained of a slight attack of indigestion, but did not appear to be at all apprehensive. Arriving at the hotel he repaired to his room, and with his wife and daughter was discussing the annual summer trip to his old home in Long Island.

So suddenly did death come that the wife and daughter knew nothing of the loss they had sustained until it was all over. There was a short lull in the conversation, and Mr. Bassett had reclined in his chair. Mrs. Bassett glanced at him after a pause and the pale face, staring eyes, and the limp arms hanging by his side, told the fateful story.

Mr. Bassett suffered a similar stoke of apoplexy in December, 1897. He was confined to his bed the remainder of the winter, but was able to go East in the spring. He returned last fall and up to within an hour of his death was able to attend to business affairs.

He was seventy five years of age and leaves a wife and three daughters, Mrs. J.M. Lewis; Miss George Bassett, this city; Mrs. Walter Kimball, Boston.

James F. Bassett was born near Sag Harbor, Long Island, N.Y. in 1824.

While still a young man he went west-ward, and for several years resided in California. In the early '60s he returned to his old home and married. The same year he went west again, this time settling at McGregor, Iowa, where he became a member of the firm of Bassett, Huntting & Co., grain merchants. He retired from this firm after nearly thirty years connection with it, and came to Minneapolis in 1897 and became a member of the firm with which he was connected at the time of his death. During his entire residence in Minneapolis he has lived at the West Hotel. - Pioneer Press.
