Died August 15th 1873 at the residence of his parents in Mendon township, of hip disease, Peter S. Cooley.
Mr. Cooley was born in Garnavillo township in October, 1843.
He enlisted in Co., E. 27th Infantry in Aug. 1862, being discharged with the Regiment at the close of the war. He had a remarkably strong and rugged constitution that enabled him for the first two years of our Service to endure every hardship, always ready for duty, never lagging on the hardest march; but like many other, his iron constitution was broken, and the disease was engendered which confined him to a bed of suffering for the past three years ended only by death. As remarked by the Rev. Mr. Portet at the grave, these suffering were endured with patience, his principal regret being that he was not permitted to gratify his ambition of distinguishing himself fin literary pursuits.
Those who in company endured the privations and hardships of the camp and field, who have stood shoulder to shoulder on the battle field are bound by ties that only death can sever.
Comrades one by one, members of our lit, the band have been ordered across the “Dark River.” We are admonished that the boy will soon return with orders for us, but we shall cherish the memories of those on the other shore until we are called. I know that I am speaking the sentiments of the survivors of our Company when I tender our sympathies to the aged parent of the deceased. He was carried to the grave by comrades who knew his worth, who could with moistened eyes, as thought of other days were awakened, say, “He was a faithful comrade and a true soldier.”
