The funeral of Mrs. Xavier Schaefer was held Saturday morning from her farm home near Clayton to St. Joseph's church at Garnavillo, where requiem mass was said by Rev. H. Sharphoff, pastor. Interment was made in St. Joseph's cemetery at Garnavillo.
Mary Anna Auer was born in Garnavillo township on Nov. 20, 1876, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Auer, and lived here her entire life. June 23, 1880, she made her first communion and on Jan. 4, 1896, she was married to Xavier Schaefer at St. Joseph's church, Garnavillo. Here she raised her family, consisting of three girls and three boys, who, with her husband, survive. The children are: Herold, at home; George, of Garnavillo; Mrs. Wills Maginnis, Sacramento, Calif., and Mrs. Craddoc Meredith of Sacramento.
Mrs. Schaefer was a most devout Catholic, living her life in conformity with the teachings of her religion. She was a member of the Rosary society. Her passing brings heartfelt sorrow to the members of her family and to her countless friends. The funeral Saturday was largely attended. The following acted as honorary pallbearers: Mrs. Teresa Kister, Mrs. Hubert Zapf, Mrs. J. W. Hudek, Mrs. C. A. Reither, Mrs. John Stoeffler, Sr., Mrs. W. H. Schumacher.
