Mrs. LeRoy D. Walther Smith was born April 30, 1876, in Unteralla by Dermback in Thüringen Staten, Germany. She came to America with her mother in September, 1883, going directly to Clermont to meet the father, who came to America two years previously.

After living in Clermont a few months the family moved to Elgin and later to Mederville. In 1885 they moved to Elkader, where she received her education. She taught school for eight years, six in the rural schools and two in the Elkader public school. On Dec. 25, 1900, she was married to LeRoy D. Smith and they started farming on Mr. Smith's father's farm, where they spent their life with the exception of several years spent in Elkader.

Mrs. Smith became seriously ill about a year ago and was moved to the home of her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Dinan, in St. Olaf. There she regained her health and about three weeks ago returned to her home. Se was there only a short time when she became ill again and was returned to the Dinan home two weeks ago. She died Friday morning, Nov. 4, at the age of 73 years, six months and four days.

She was a member of the Peace Evangelical and Reformed church and in her younger years took an active part in the Sunday school and the Dorcas society. She was also a member of the Royal Neighbors.

Three children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Smith: Clyde, now living on the home farm; Luvre, who died at the age of five years; and L'Dean, Mrs. Robert Dinan, of St. Olaf. Surviving are her husband; the two children, Clyde and L'Dean; one grandchild, Jean Luvre Dinan; and three sisters, Amelia, Mrs L. J. Stalbaum of Elkader, Mary, Mrs. John Falb of Elgin, and Emma, Mrs. Fred Schultz of Postville. One sister, Anna, Mrs. Chas. Huebner of Postville, and one brother, Wm. Walther of Elkader, preceded her in death.

Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at 1:30 at the Robert Dinan home and at 2 o'clock from the Peace Evangelical and Reformed church, with the Rev. Paul Kitterer officiating. Burial was in the East Side cemetery.

Pallbearers were: Gust Storbeck, Elmer Mueller, Harold Downey, Frances Meyer, Bill Miller, and Herb. Zurcher. Flower bearers were Mrs. Alvin Klink, Mrs. Arno Gottschalk, and Mrs. Andrew Dummermuth.
