Elkader Register, Thur., 11 Dec. 1924. Volga City Views column.

Mrs. Emma Thurlburn was born in Erith, England, Oct. 5, 1833, and died at her home in Volga Dec. 5, 1924, being 91 years and two months old. In 1853 her parents came to America and took up their abode in Lockport, N.Y., where they resided for a few years. In 1856 they again moved coming to Iowa and settled on a farm near Volga. In 1858 Miss Emma was united in marriage to Mr. Charles Woods. They were the parents of two sons, the eldest, Sydney, dying in early manhood in 1883, and Warner, who resides on the home farm.

After a number of years spent in farming Mr. Woods health began to fail and they decided to move to Volga.

The end came quite suddenly and without suffering.

She leaves one son and four grandchildren, Alice, Ruth, Frank and Donald Woods, besides one nephew, Delos Crain, two nieces, Mrs. Emma Adams and Mrs. Clara White, all of Volga. Mrs. Woods was of a social, friendly nature. She will be missed by her old and tried friends. She enjoyed religious services and was frequent attendant when her health permitted. In the passing of Mrs. Woods another of the old settlers has been taken from the ranks.

"They are gathered homeward, one by one."

The funeral was held from the M.E. church Sunday, Dec. 7. Rev. Crumb preached the sermon and Rev. Polk and Rev. J. Jennings assisted. Burial was in Hill Crest cemetery.
