Elkader Register, Thur., 29 May 1924. Strawberry Point column.
Little do we know what will happen during the day. Such was the case last Wednesday afternoon when word was passed from one to another that James Farmer had passed away. Friends could hardly realize it as he had been up and around as usual. Just how his death occurred no one knows as he was alone, but from what we can learn he had been in the woodshed splitting kindling and had stepped on the ladder to get some boards when he fell backwards striking the back of his head on a door. As Mrs. Farmer was at a nearby neighbor, he got up and walked to the porch and neighbors hearing his screams went over and when help arrived carried him in the house and laid him on the bed and notified Mrs. Farmer and Dr. F. H. Howard and Father Casey but before Dr. Howard arrived he had passed away. Funeral services were held Friday morning in St. Mary's Catholic church conducted by Rev. Casey. Interment took place in the Cox Creek cemetery. Besides his wife, a daughter and four sons, he leaves a host of relatives and friends to mourn his sudden death and the sympathy of all is extended to the bereaved ones.
