Monday, October 15th, 1900, occurred the death of Melinda Sophrona Jennings, wife of Edwin Jennings, aged 33 years.

It is with the deepest regret and sorrow that we are called upon to chronicle the death of this most excellent wife and mother. Deceased was a daughter of Joseph Harbaugh and wife and was born and raised in Mallory township.

About six years ago she was bound in the holy bonds of wedlock to Edwin Jennings. Her domestic life has been a happy one. About two weeks ago she was taken sick and all that kind friends and medical aid could do was of no avail.

She leaves a husband and five children to mourn the loss of a kind and affectionate wife and mother. Three of the children were from the former wife of Mr. Jennings, but in all these years she has been a kind and loving mother to them and it has been her constant aim to do everything for the betterment of her family. To the bereaved husband we extend our deepest sympathy in the sad death and loss of his beloved wife and companion.

Mrs. Jennings was a member of Elk Valley Rebekah Lodge No. 500, of Elkport, which lodge had charge of the funeral. There were over eighty five Rebekahs and Odd Fellows in line to show their love and respect for their departed sister and for the bereaved brother Odd Fellow to whom it is such a cruel blow. It was one of the largest funerals ever held in or near Elkport, 107 teams being in line. Rev. Hursch of Updegraff, preached an able sermon at the home of the deceased. May she rest in peace.

~The Register, Thursday evening, October 18, 1900 (Elkport & vicinity column)

Note: Burial is in Mt. Harmony cemetery. See pg 1 of the Jennings Family Album in the photo section of the Clayton co. IAGenWeb site for photos of Melinda.
