Elkader Register, Thur., 1 Nov. 1906. Luana column.
Doubtless all this community know of the very sad accident which occurred, as the accommodation train was coming from Monona to Luana Thursday evening, and which resulted in the death of Dave Walter, a well known resident of Luana. The injuries inflicted Thursday were the direct cause of his death, which occurred Saturday night about 9:20. All the time between the accident and his death he suffered terribly and when death finally claimed him, came as a relief from his suffering. This dreadful accident and death, together with Mr. Russell's sudden death, has cast a dark shadow over Luana and her inhabitants. The large number who attended the funeral Tuesday helps to show the sympathy all feel for Mrs. Russell. The deceased leaves to mourn his untimely death his wife, Mrs. Mattie Walter; his father and mother, John Walter and wife, of Riceville; five brothers, Charley, John Jr., Ross and Ray, all of Riceville, and Fred, of this place; also a sister, Mrs. Esther Brown, of Riceville, all of whom were present at the funeral. Besides these members of the immediate family there are a large number of uncles, aunts and cousins who reside south of town, and all of whom attended the funeral. The Woodmen, of which order he was a member, took charge of the funeral.
