In a letter received by Mrs. H.H. Barnard last Monday, Mrs. Amelia Murdock Wing tells of the death of her mother, Mrs. Louisa Murdock at their home in Humboldt, Iowa, on Saturday July 26th. She had been feeble all spring and on Friday July 25 had been overcome by the heat and did not rally, passing away suddenly at 2:30 p.m. the next day.
This closes the life of a remarkable woman. Born in New York state June 18th, 1820, she reached her 99th birthday last June. She was a pioneer of Clayton county, coming to this county with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Luther Patch in 1837. In 1845 she was married to Samuel Murdock, then a rising young lawyer, later he became Judge Murdock and very prominent in the affairs of the county.
They made their home on the farm known as the "Evergreens" near Garnavillo for many years, later moving to Elkader where Mr. Murdock died in January 1897.
Mrs. Murdock's father, Luther Patch, died in 1886 and her mother in 1899, the mother having reached the age of 100 years, ten months and ten days.
Two daughters, Rev. Marion Murdock and Mrs. Amelia Murdock Wing survive and for some years Mrs. Murdock has made her home with Mrs. Wing at Humboldt.
Mrs. Murdock was a remarkable woman in many ways a strong forceful character, with unusual mental ability which we understand she retained with full use of her faculties to the close of her exceptionally long life.
Coming to this county in the early days the history of her life would be largely a history of the county, so prominent was she and her husband in its affairs for many years. In many ways it would read like a romance to those of this generation. All honor to her memory! It was such people as she and her worthy husband who made possible the westward path of civilization and made our forests and prairies into the prosperous farms and towns of today.
