Elkader Register, Thur., 30 Aug. 1906. Garnavillo News column.
The life of Mrs. Wm. Kregel, which was despaired of for weeks and even months, came mercifully to an end last Saturday evening, Aug. 25th, at seven minutes past six o'clock.
Mrs. Kregel, nee Margaret Meyer, was born Sept. 28, 1845, in Cincinnati, Ohio. She was the third oldest child of Dietrich Henry Meyer and wife, nee Margaret Anna Kregel. The family came to Garnavillo in 1854 and since 1856 conducted a general store at this place, the firm being well known as M. A. & W. F. Meyer.
Mrs. Kregel was married Feb. 22, 1881. She was the mother of three children of whom two preceded her in death, one in infancy and Olivia at the age of eleven years.
Deceased was not of a strong constitution, but her splendid courage and self reliance never deserted her, and even during her last illness, of which she spent seven months of sick bed suffering with dropsy, she maintained her patience and strength of purpose. She was willing to endure all in hope of regaining her health, that she might live for the sake of those she loved. The husband, who has lost such a wife, and the son, who has lost such a mother, deserve and receive the sympathy of the community that knew her worth.
When she became unable to take any nourishment, it was known that the inevitable end was rapidly approaching. For the second time during her illness she then partook of the Lord's Supper. Her spirit and devotion were the administration of her friends and when the crisis came she was reconciled to leave and breathed her last as peacefully as a child going to sleep on its mother's bosom.
The funeral services were conducted by Rev. J. Wm. Braun, Tuesday afternoon, in St. Paul's Lutheran church. Interment took place in the family lot in the new cemetery. A large concourse of sorrowing and sympathizing friends were present at the burial. The floral tributes were many and exceptionally beautiful. In her death the husband has been deprived of a devoted companion, the son a good mother, the Frauen Verein of a faithful member, the church of an earnest devout Christian, and the people in general of a sympathetic friend.
She is survived by her husband, Wm. Kregel; a son, Wilbert; two step-daughters, Mrs. Amelia Oelke, residing at Audubon, Ia., and Mrs. Sophia Schmidt, at Oskaloosa; and also three brothers and one sister, John residing at New Hartford, Ia., Henry at Nebraska City, Neb., Wm. F. at Garnavillo, and Emma, wife of W. C. Meyer, also of Garnavillo.
