Marie Lewin, nee Bauer, was born in Germany on Nov. 10th, 1839. At the age of twenty-one she was married to William Lewin. She was the mother of fourteen children, eleven of whom died in their youth in Germany. In 1884 the parents and the remaining three children emigrated to this country and took up their abode in Garnavillo twp. After her husband's death in 1896 Mrs. Lewin lived with her daughter Ernestine and husband, John Lewin, residing near Cere.
On Jan. 14th, 1899 the daughter died and deceased then kept house for her son-in-law until a year ago when she found her health failing and went to stay with her daughter Caroline, wife of Karl Timmerman, residing five miles north of McGregor. She was relieved from a lingering siege of consumption on August 15th, 1906, having reached an age of 67 years, 9 months and 5 days. Her burial took place Saturday afternoon at Ceres. The services were conducted by Rev. Mall, of St. Peter's church. Deceased has many acquaintances in this community who have always regarded her for her Christian fortitude in the many afflictions which have characterized her life.
Her son William, of Victor, N.Y., and daughter Caroline Timmerman, of McGregor, constitute the surviving family.
