Elkader Register, Thur., 24 May 1906. Guttenberg column.
Clarence C. Ratekin, the young man who was removed from here to the sanitarium at Prairie du Chien, May 7, with hopes that treatment there would restore his health, passed away Monday morning, one week after his arrival there. Death was due to tuberculosis of the bowels. Deceased was born at Shenandoah, Page county, Iowa, Feb. 3, 1876, and was therefore 30 years, 3 months and 12 days of age. Previous to his being taken ill Mr. Ratekin was employed as traveling salesman for a wholesale clothing firm and had his headquarters at Salt Lake City, Utah. Several months ago he came here to visit his sister, Mrs. A. A. Gossard, and hoping, too, that a temporary retirement and rest from his labors on the road would be beneficial to his failing health, but instead, he grew gradually weaker and weaker, causing his friends to lose hopes for his recovery, and to them death came as no surprise.
