J. Thornton, father of W. O. Thornton, of this place, died Tuesday, April 17, 1906, at his home in Des Moines. The funeral will be held here tomorrow (Friday) at 10:30 o'clock.

James Thornton died at his home in Des Moines, Wednesday April 18th at the advanced age of 73 years, after a sickness of several weeks of cancer of the stomach.
The body was brought to Monona where the funeral occurred from the M. E. church Friday, April 20th, at 10:30 a.m., the Rev. Schell, an old-time friend of the family, officiating. The body was interred by the side of his first wife.
Quite a number from here attended the funeral. Mr. Thornton was a resident of this place quite a number of years and was very highly respected by all who knew him.
The body was accompanied from Des Moines by Mrs. Thornton and children, Bessie and Jay and Mrs. J. N. Topliff, Jr. Mr. Thornton was widely known in Des Moines, having been engaged in the real estate business for quite a number of years, and in which he was very successful. In all his dealings he was the soul of honor and merited the confidence of all with whom he had any dealings, and will be greatly missed in the locality in which he lived.
He is survived by five children, four boys and one daughter — Orlando, C. C., H. A., R. J. and Mrs. Banks, from a former marriage and two by the present wife, Bessie and Jay, all of whom were present at the funeral. Their large circle of friends here unite in expressions of sorrow for the grief stricken friends.
