Elkader Register, Thur., 12 Apr. 1906

Charles Christopher Engelhardt was born on the 19th of November, 1850, the son of John Engelhadt and Maria Engelhardt, nee Schmidt, at Preamen, Province of Pommern, Germany.

He spent the days of his youth at the parental home and in 1863 came with his parents to America, the family locating near Garnavillo, this county. In 1866 his father bought a farm near St. Olaf, the old homestead where the deceased lived until called to his eternal home.

On February 20th, 1874, he was married to Miss Minna Taake, who now mourns the loss of her husband.

This union was blessed with nine children, six sons and three daughters, all of whom are living and were assembled at the grave of their father. They are: George W., of Palmyra, Ia.; Mrs. Bertha Buck, of Calmar, Ia.; Otto L., of Luana; Charles L., of Maurice, Ia.; Hugo F., of Velva, N.D.; Ella L., Freddie R., Pearl M. and Roy W., who are yet at home. One brother, Henry, of St. Olaf, and three sisters, Mrs. Reinke, of Farmersberg township; Mrs. Krambeer, of Monona; and Mrs. Heckendorf, of California, mourn the departure of their brother. Two brothers, William and Rudolph, have preceded him in death.

His last months and especially his last days were full of bitter suffering. Since March 13th he had been confined to his bed and in spite of the very best of care by his loving family, his brother, Henry, and many friends, he grew steadily worse and passed away on Monday, April 2nd, at four o'clock p.m., having reached the age of 55 years, 4 months and 24 days.

Mr. Engelhardt was well known in his part of the county and had many friends who liked him for his sunny character. He always tried to look on the bright side of life and always helped to enliven those in his company in the same way. He was a peace loving citizen and liked to see his neighbors prosper as himself and was always willing to assist a friend and neighbor. His family has lost a good father and husband. He was a man in whom the great fight between spirit and flesh took a great part. Often he regretted with tears in his eyes that the spirit was so weak that he could not overcome the temptations of the inferior side.

Funeral services were held on Thursday at the home and from thence to the church at Farmersburg, which was not large enough to hold the large number of friends who came to pay the last tribute of respect. Interment was at the cemetery at Read. Rev G. F. Braun, of Farmersburg, performed the last rites.
