Mr. Bennington was born in Huntingtonshire, England, Feb. 21, 1834. He was reared and educated in England, where at the age of 19 he married Miss Esther Bidwell. They emigrated to America, landing in New York May 1, 1853. After remaining at Lockport, N.Y., two years, they started for Clayton county, coming to Galena, Ill., by rail and thence by stage to Clayton county, settling on their present farm in Sperry township.
To this union were born five children, Charles, Anna, Will and Samuel, Jr., all of Volga, and Mrs. E. W. Griffith, of Marion, Ia. One sister, Miss Emma, also resides with the family. Mrs. Bennington died April 7th, 1881.
Deceased has been one of the early settlers of Sperry township, and has acquired one of the largest farms in the county. For the past twenty years, with his sons, he has been engaged in stock raising, making a specialty of imported horses, cattle, sheep and swine.
Mr. Bennington was one of the most highly respected men of Sperry township, and was quite active in business until ill health compelled him to turn over the management of their extensive farm to others. The community at large will mourn his departure.
