Elkader Register, Thur., 1 Feb. 1906. Monona column.
Mary Koeverkopf was born in Germany in 1829, and died in Monona, Iowa, Jan. 21, 1906. With her parents she came to this country, in early childhood, and soon after was left an orphan. She was brought up in the Catholic church, in which she remained until the age of seventeen years, when she joined the German Methodist church with which she continued until her death. In 1851 she was married to John Frederick Heinz with whom she spent fifty-four years of domestic happiness. One year and one day previous, her husband died, from which shock she never recovered. He was a minister in the German Methodist church and in the early pioneer days had for appointments several places in Clayton county. Mrs. Heins came to Monona, on a visit, about three months ago, and her genial manners and winning ways endeared her to all with whom she came in contact. She leaves to mourn her sudden demise, one brother of Kansas City, Mo., one sister, of Chicago, Ill., and two adopted daughters, and many neighbors and friends at her home city, St. Joseph, Mo. Her husband was a brother of Mrs. Frank Hupfer, with whom she was visiting at the time of her death. A number of friends gathered at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Hupfer, Monday evening, when Rev. Williams, pastor of the M.E. church, after reading the 23d Psalm and other passage of scripture, made a few remarks, offered a very affecting prayer, then the casket was closed, hiding from view the form of one whom to know was to love. The remains were sent to her home at St. Joseph, Mo.
(Note: Both surname spellings, Heins/Heinz, were used in the article.)
