Elkader Register, Fri., 26 Oct. 1883.

Mrs. John Cunningham.

This very estimable lady died at the residence of her husband in Read township, on Friday of last week, after having suffered a long time from consumption. She was about 45 years of age, and leaves a husband and seven children to mourn the loss of a kind and loving wife and an indulgent parent.

Her remains were laid away to their final rest in the cemetery at Garnavillo on Sunday last, the funeral being attended by a large number of the relatives and neighbors of the deceased, showing in what high esteem she was held where best known. May she rest in peace.

Added by S. Ferrall 2/2/2017:

This is most likely Katherine / Catherine (Dugan) Cunningham, enumerated on the 1880 census, Read twp.; age 45y, in the household of her husband John and 8 children ages 2-20 years old. The eldest daughter may have been married & out of the household at the time of the mother's death in 1883, or one of the children may have died by 1883.

A marriage license was issued to John Cunningham and Catherine Dugan on the 24th Nov. 1857 (see Marriage Records on the Clayton co. website)

John Cunningham sold out in 1888 and removed to Sheldon, O'Brien co., Iowa. He died in Jan. 1908 & was buried in the "family lot" in Garnavillo, St. Joseph cemetery.

It is very likely that his 1st wife, Katherine / Catherine is also buried in the family lot at St. Joseph's cemetery.
