Elkader Register, Thur., 10 Sept. 1903. Elkport and Vicinity column.

On Thursday morning, Sept. 3rd, our community was shocked when the news was spread that Philip Quinlan had passed to his reward - the life to come in the other world.

The deceased was born in county Limerick, Ireland, in 1822, and was about 81 years of age at the time of his death.

At the age of 14 years he emigrated to America with his family landing at New York City. He spent some years in the east and south and came to Illinois.

In Illinois he was married to Ellen Donovan in 1855. Later they came to Iowa and settled in Clayton county on the homestead where the family still resides.

He leaves an aged wife and a family of two sons and four daughters living, three preceding him in death. Of this family Peter and Rose reside at home with their aged mother, Wm. and Anastasia, now Mrs. M. Nelligan, reside in Montana, Ellen, now Mrs. Martin Buckley, resides in Hancock Co., and Mary, now Mrs. B. Curran, lives here.

Philip Quinlan was a man honored and respected by all, he was a kind father and husband, a true friend and neighbor, a man who loved his God, his country and his fellow men. The funeral was held Saturday from the Catholic church at Elkport, services being conducted by Rev. Daniel T. Minogue. May his soul rest in peace.

In another column:

Interment was made in the Elkport cemetery. Mrs. Philip Quinlan is severely ill from the shock of the sudden death of her husband.
