Elkader Register, Thur., 2 April 1903. Garnavillo column.
On Thursday morning, March 26th, occurred the death of Carl Joachim Rantzow, aged 65 years 11 days. He was born in (looks like Rene), Mecklenburg, Schwerin, March 15th, 1838, and on June 1st, 1868, he was married to Caroline Schultz. To this union were born three children, Louise, Carl and Paul, the former of which died in 1878. In June 1881 he immigrated to this country, the remaining members of his family following in October of the same year, settling at Clayton. In Jan. 1882 the family moved to this place, where he has since resided and followed the cobbler trade. Paul and Carl with his family and a patient wife afflicted with blindness, mourn his demise. Funeral took place Sunday afternoon, Rev. W. Braun having charge of the services. Interment took place in the new cemetery.
To the wife now without her guide:
"Jesus knows all, all your sorrow,
Courage, courage fainting friend,
Unto Him all pow'r is given,
He will keep you to the end.
Jesus knows ! Jesus knows !
Yes, your Saviour knows it all."
